TEACHING
Figure Sculpture Workshop
Pacific Art League (Palo Alto, CA), May 21-22, 2022
In this intensive two days workshop, working from a live model with water-based clay, students will focus on the gesture rather than the detailed anatomy of the human figure, with the objective of improving their ability to depict life, movement, and emotion. Starting with short poses (20 min to one hour) on Saturday, students will have the opportunity to create several “sketches”, before working on longer poses the second day. The class will also address technical aspects of clay sculpting such as types of clay, tools, armatures, requirements for firing, and more. Demonstrations and hands-on critique will be an important part of the class.

Figure Drawing Workshop
Pacific Art League (Palo Alto, CA), March 19-20, 2022
In this two day intensive workshop, we’ll emphasize the looseness and the expression rather than the realism or the anatomical accuracy, with the objective of helping the students to find their own voice.
Working exclusively with short poses (30 seconds to 5 minutes), students will practice various techniques and exercises, in order to develop hand-eye coordination, improve the quality of their lines and bring liveliness and emotion in their drawings of the human figure.
The class addresses things such as where to start and in which order to develop a drawing, what to look for to create a dynamic gesture, what to draw and not to draw, how to connect the figure to the page/space, etc... Demonstrations and hands-on critiques are an important part of the class.

Online Figure Drawing class
Focusing on short poses, students use different media (pen, pencil, charcoal, and watercolor) and practice techniques and exercises including blind drawing (not looking at the paper), to develop hand-eye coordination and to improve the liveliness and expression of their drawings of the human figure along with their overall drawing skills. Elements of drawing (lines, lost edges, connections, focal point, color, etc...), as well as strategies for gesture drawing (such as key anatomical elements to look for, and in which order to start and develop the drawing) are addressed. This online class use photos of models as references. Demonstrations and critiques are an important part of the class, and students can expect to receive individual attention throughout.
